Stephanie Simon of NY1 reports on Twelve Ophelias:
Earlier this summer the Public Theater presented Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in Central Park, so what’s next for Shakespeare fans? How about a continuation of “Hamlet,” but in a swimming pool?
“12 Ophelias” is a loose continuation of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” telling the tragic story of Ophelia whose brought back to life out of the water and reunited with her fellow “Hamlet” cast mates. Teddy Bergman is the director of the production and co-founder of Woodshed Collective, a theater company that makes its business creating site-specific ensemble work.
“We were students at Vassar and when we all graduated we established it in New York and like to do site-specific work,” says Bergman. “We got this play about a year ago and read it and loved it, but we couldn’t figure out what to do with it and then we got a contact at the pool and started talking with them and it became available and it seemed like a match made in heaven.”
Pepper Binkley stars as Ophelia in the piece and says that performing in a dry pool is a new experience every night.
“The space works both for you and against you depending on what’s happening,” says Binkley. “So the wind will come and it will blow into the mics or mics will stop working. Then at other times the moon will come up and be in the right place and the whole audience can see that happening as we’re talking about stuff that is of related imagery.”
